Desloratadine

Description

Desloratadine is a long-acting, non-drowsy antihistamine specifically designed to alleviate symptoms associated with allergies. It functions by inhibiting the action of histamine, a natural chemical produced by the body during allergic reactions, thereby providing relief from various allergic symptoms.

Uses / Indications

• Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
• Perennial allergic rhinitis
• Chronic idiopathic urticaria (persistent hives)
• Sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes
• Itchy throat or nose
• Skin allergies leading to itching or rashes

Dosage and Administration

Adults and children 12 years and older:
5 mg once daily (typically 1 tablet or 5 mL syrup)

Children aged 6-11 years:
2.5 mg once daily (usually 2.5 mL syrup or ½ tablet if appropriate)

How It Works (Mechanism of Action)

Desloratadine selectively blocks peripheral H1 histamine receptors, effectively preventing histamine from binding and initiating allergy symptoms. Its ability to minimally cross the blood-brain barrier contributes to its low incidence of drowsiness compared to older antihistamines.

Missed Dose / Overdose

Missed a dose?
Take it as soon as you remember. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double up.

Overdose symptoms:

• Extreme drowsiness
• Fast heartbeat
• Headache
• Nausea

Contact a poison control center or seek emergency medical help immediately if overdose symptoms occur.
