Fexofenadine

Description

Fexofenadine is a non-drowsy antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms, including those caused by seasonal allergies or hay fever. It operates by inhibiting the action of histamine, a substance in the body that triggers allergic symptoms.

Uses / Indications

• Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
• Perennial allergic rhinitis
• Chronic idiopathic urticaria (persistent hives)
• Sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes
• Itchy throat or nose
• Skin allergies causing itching or rashes

Dosage and Administration

Adults and children 12 years and older:
60 mg twice daily or 180 mg once daily.

Children aged 6–11 years:
30 mg twice daily.

How It Works (Mechanism of Action)

Fexofenadine selectively blocks H1 histamine receptors, preventing histamine from binding and producing symptoms of allergies. It does not easily cross the blood-brain barrier, which minimizes the risk of sedation.

• Headache
• Drowsiness (generally less than with older antihistamines)
• Nausea
• Dizziness
• Dry mouth

Rare/serious side effects:

• Fast or irregular heartbeat

Missed Dose / Overdose

Missed a dose?
Take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double up.

Overdose symptoms:

• Extreme drowsiness
• Fast heartbeat
• Nausea
• Dizziness

Contact a poison control center or seek emergency medical help immediately.
