Perindopril

Description

Perindopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor commonly used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart failure. It works by relaxing blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily, which lowers blood pressure and reduces the strain on the heart.

Uses / Indications

• Hypertension (high blood pressure)
• Heart failure
• Reduction of cardiovascular events in patients with stable coronary artery disease
• Post-myocardial infarction in stable patients

Dosage and Administration

Adults:
4 mg once daily; may be increased to 8 mg once daily based on blood pressure response and tolerability.

Patients with renal impairment:
Dosage adjustment may be necessary depending on the severity of renal disease.

How It Works (Mechanism of Action)

Perindopril inhibits the action of ACE, which converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II—a hormone that constricts blood vessels. By blocking this process, Perindopril facilitates vasodilation, lowers blood pressure, and reduces the workload on the heart.

Side Effects

• Dizziness or lightheadedness

Missed Dose / Overdose

Missed a dose?
Take it as soon as you remember. If it’s closer to the time of your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double up.

Overdose symptoms:

• Severe dizziness or fainting
• Rapid heartbeat
• Dry cough

Contact a poison control center or seek emergency medical help immediately.

Contraindications

• Allergic to Perindopril or any ACE inhibitors
• History of angioedema related to previous ACE inhibitor therapy
