Prazosin

Description

Prazosin is a medication primarily used to treat high blood pressure and symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is an alpha-1 adrenergic antagonist that works by relaxing the blood vessels and muscles in the prostate, which helps improve blood flow and reduces the pressure in the blood vessels.

Uses / Indications

• Hypertension (high blood pressure)
• Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to manage nightmares
• Raynaud’s phenomenon (to improve circulation)
• Heart failure (as an adjunct treatment)

Dosage and Administration

Adults:
Initial dosage of 1 mg taken orally at bedtime. Dosage may be increased to 2 mg, then to 5 mg as needed, typically based on blood pressure response.

How It Works (Mechanism of Action)

Missed Dose / Overdose

Missed a dose?
Take it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule. Do not double up.

Overdose symptoms:

• Severe drowsiness
• Rapid heartbeat
• Severe dizziness or fainting
• Unusual weakness

Contact a poison control center or seek emergency medical help immediately.
