Vardenafil

Description

Vardenafil is a medication primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It belongs to a class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which work by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, thereby helping to achieve and maintain an erection.

Dosage and Administration

Adults:
The usual starting dose is 10 mg taken orally approximately 60 minutes before sexual activity. Based on efficacy and tolerability, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 20 mg or decreased to 5 mg.

Note: Vardenafil should not be taken more than once a day. Dosage may vary based on individual response and medical advice.

How It Works (Mechanism of Action)

Vardenafil works by inhibiting phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), an enzyme that regulates blood flow in the penis. By blocking this enzyme, vardenafil increases the levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), leading to relaxation of smooth muscle and increased blood flow, facilitating an erection in response to sexual stimulation.

Side Effects

Common side effects:

• Headache
• Flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling)
• Nasal congestion
• Dyspepsia (indigestion)

Rare/serious side effects:

• Vision changes (such as sudden loss of vision)
• Hearing loss or ringing in the ears
• Priapism (an erection lasting more than 4 hours)

Missed Dose / Overdose

Missed a dose?
Vardenafil is usually taken as needed, so a missed dose is unlikely. Skip the missed dose if it’s almost time for the next dose.

Overdose symptoms:

• Severe dizziness or fainting
• Prolonged erection (priapism)
• Vision or hearing disturbances

Contact a poison control center or seek emergency medical help immediately.

Contraindications

• Allergic to Vardenafil or any of its components
• Use of nitrates or nitric oxide donors in any form
• Severe liver impairment
